How sheet weight is calculated
Any sheet, any material
kg = L (mm) × W (mm) × T (mm) × density ÷ 1,000,000Density in g/cm³: 7.85 for mild steel and GI.
Per square metre (steel)
kg/m² = 7.85 × thickness (mm)Quick rules for steel sheets
4 × 8 ft ≈ 23.34 × T4 × 10 ft ≈ 29.17 × T5 × 10 ft ≈ 36.46 × TT is thickness in mm, the result is kg per sheet.
Worked example
A 4 × 8 ft GI sheet, 1.2 mm: 1219.2 × 2438.4 × 1.2 × 7.85 ÷ 1,000,000 = 28.0 kg. Twenty sheets weigh 560 kg.
SWG gauge to mm
| SWG | mm | SWG | mm |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 4.06 | 18 | 1.22 |
| 10 | 3.25 | 20 | 0.91 |
| 12 | 2.64 | 22 | 0.71 |
| 14 | 2.03 | 24 | 0.56 |
| 16 | 1.63 | 26 | 0.46 |
Sheet weight questions
How do you calculate the weight of a steel sheet?
Multiply length × width × thickness in millimetres, then multiply by the density (7.85 g/cm³ for mild steel) and divide by 1,000,000 to get kilograms. A quick rule: one square metre of mild steel sheet weighs 7.85 kg for every millimetre of thickness.
How much does a 4 × 8 ft steel sheet weigh?
A 4 × 8 ft (1219 × 2438 mm) mild steel sheet weighs about 23.34 kg per millimetre of thickness: about 23.3 kg at 1 mm, 35.0 kg at 1.5 mm, 46.7 kg at 2 mm and 70.0 kg at 3 mm.
How much does a 4 × 10 ft or 5 × 10 ft steel sheet weigh?
A 4 × 10 ft mild steel sheet weighs about 29.17 kg per millimetre of thickness (43.8 kg at 1.5 mm, 58.3 kg at 2 mm). A 5 × 10 ft sheet weighs about 36.46 kg per millimetre (54.7 kg at 1.5 mm, 72.9 kg at 2 mm).
What density is used for steel, GI, stainless and aluminium sheet?
Mild steel (HR and CR) and galvanized (GI) sheet are calculated at 7.85 g/cm³. Stainless steel 304 is about 7.93 g/cm³, stainless 316 about 7.98 g/cm³, aluminium 2.70 g/cm³, copper 8.96 g/cm³ and brass 8.50 g/cm³.
What is SWG gauge in mm?
SWG (Standard Wire Gauge) is a thickness scale where a higher number means thinner sheet. For example 10 SWG = 3.25 mm, 12 SWG = 2.64 mm, 14 SWG = 2.03 mm, 16 SWG = 1.63 mm, 18 SWG = 1.22 mm, 20 SWG = 0.91 mm, 22 SWG = 0.71 mm and 24 SWG = 0.56 mm.
Is the calculated sheet weight exact?
It is a theoretical weight based on nominal size and standard density. Actual sheets can differ by a few percent because of rolling tolerance, and galvanized sheet is slightly heavier because of its zinc coating.
